What should I do if the police ask to search my car or house?

You should always refuse to submit to any search by any law enforcement officer unless they have a valid search warrant. This has nothing to do with you having or not having anything to hide. Why let a stranger rummage through your car or house just looking for anything to criminally charge you. They need probable cause to search your car or house. So make them get a search warrant and put their reasons for the search on paper.
